In our first blog post, Caroline and Murray Ireland, owner-operators of CK Tours, open up about their decision to start a VW Campervan tour business in Christchurch.
Reminiscing after a trip to America, Caroline and Murray Ireland realised one of the most enjoyable aspects of their family holidays abroad was meeting the locals, who provided more personable local tours than the big tour companies.
“They were run by friendly, engaging personalities, who made it really fun and memorable – so we decided we could do the same here in Christchurch,” says Caroline.
They have been fortunate to travel a fair amount and always remember ‘Larry’ who gave them a personalised, funny tour of Washington DC.
After many successful years in real estate, it was time for a complete change for the couple. Showcasing the city and region they simply love was the perfect choice, and doing it in a way that would provide an unforgettable experience for their customers was a no-brainer.
The first decision, after deciding on running local tours of Christchurch, was what vehicles should to use? It really didn’t take long to settle on vintage VW Campervans (or Kombi vans as they are known by Kiwis). Perfectly formed and harking back to the good old days, these iconic vans simply capture the essence of New Zealand and travelling adventures.
The VW Kombi van represents adventure and brings back many happy summer holiday memories for us – people connect with them worldwide.
The vans have been meticulously worked on by local VW specialists, Mark and Tony from The Metric Nut, to ensure they are of the highest standard for comfort, quality, and safety.
“The Campervans – Judy and Moira – are named after my mother and aunt, who both had a great passion for life,” Caroline says.
So this how we roll….
Murray is the tour guide, while Caroline drives the cute mint-and-white Kombi vans which comfortably seat six people each. Six is the perfect number for us to host. You can come with your family and friends, meet visitors from out of town, and together experience Christchurch Ōtautahi yet still get treated to a very personalised tour.
There is so much to offer in the city now and many exciting opportunities to come with the rebuild – we’re not focusing on the earthquakes. It’s also a chance to showcase Christchurch’s heritage, combined with quirky history facts, Kiwi culture, and a lot of fun.
Caroline and Murray work hard to guarantee a fun-filled experience on their Christchurch tours, sharing wonderful stories and fun facts, local Maori culture, along with local knowledge you’d never pick up in a guide book. Tour customers are also treated to delicious refreshments and treats from local producers, served from an old fashioned picnic hamper.
We love new experiences and meeting new people, both locals, and people from all over the world. We take great pride in providing our customers with the best possible experience.
CK Tours offers a number of different Christchurch tours, from Maori Culture Through Art, to a Foodie Tour, plus the ubiquitous Christchurch City Sightseeing Tour.
They also offer Judy and Moira as unique wedding transport and already have a couple of these special occasions under their belt.
